Improving the safety, wellbeing and health in the region

Reduce the gap between the North East and the rest of the UK and close the gap between the region’s poorly performing places.

3. Safety, Wellbeing and Health

  • Ensure GO priorities contribute to the strategies for improving the region’s safety, wellbeing and health.
  • Continue to reduce health inequalities with an emphasis on alcohol, obesity and smoking.

This priority relates to the following public service agreements:

15. Address the disadvantage that individuals experience because of their gender, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief (PDF 447 KB)
16. Increase the proportion of socially excluded adults in settled accommodation and employment, education or training (PDF 348 KB)
17. Tackle poverty and promote greater independence and wellbeing in later life (PDF 223 KB)
18. Promote better health and wellbeing for all (PDF 400 KB)

4. Climate Change

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
Work on climate change mitigation by encouraging local partners to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and embed a low-carbon culture in the region.

Raise awareness and understanding of government policy on climate change adaptation, particularly the new requirements of the Climate Change Act.

This priority relates to the following public service agreements:

27. Lead the global effort to avoid dangerous climate change (PDF 336 KB)
28. Secure a healthy natural environment for today and the future (PDF 348 KB)

5. Family Poverty
Raise the profile and ensure emphasis on family and child poverty in the region (to include teenage pregnancy and those not in education, employment or training).

This priority relates to the following public service agreements:

9. Halve the number of children in poverty by 2010-11, on the way to eradicating child poverty by 2020 (PDF 153 KB)
17. Tackle poverty and promote greater independence and wellbeing in later life (PDF 223 KB)
