Children at Sure Start Armstrong meet with Jackie Doughty, Director of Children and Learners

Children and Young People

We represent the Department for Children, Schools and Families in the North East. Over the coming year, we will build on the work we have done over the past two years, continuing to work with our partners and stakeholders at local, regional and national level to improve outcomes for all the children and young people in the North East.

A number of recent policy developments around children and young people have significantly shaped the Government Office role in this important area of work. More information on the national picture

Our timeline document aims to show the different areas of our work that support and work towards successful achievement of the public service agreements.

We will also be seeking to respond to the challenge laid down in the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ Children's Plan to make this the best place in the world for our children and young people to grow up.

We will play an active role in ensuring that children, young people’s and families’ interests are appropriately reflected in local area agreement negotiations, and in the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership plan.

We also work with, and coordinate the work of a range of the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ funded consultants (known as Fieldforces), and organisations in offering both support and challenge to local authority children's services and their partners.

We also play a role in promoting and implementing the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ policies in the region, and in promoting and sharing practice across the region to support service improvement. We cover a range of children and young people policy areas from early years through to transitions to adulthood which aim to improve outcomes for children and young people in relation to:

  • being healthy
  • staying safe
  • enjoying and achieving
  • making a positive contribution
  • economic well-being.

There are also a number of specialist advisors operating in the office:

  • Regional Teenage Pregnancy Coordinator
  • Healthy Schools Coordinator
  • You’re Welcome Coordinator
  • Safeguarding Advisor.

We have a number of colleagues co-located in the office to enhance regional working:

  • School Food Trust
  • Youth Justice Board
  • Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services
  • Care Services Improvement Partnership
  • Training Development Agency.
