The 2007 young people and risk taking Life’s a Gamble conference was organised for the North East region to explore risk taking in young people, drawing together professionals from a range of backgrounds and policy areas working with young people around sexual health, teenage pregnancy, drugs, alcohol and emotional wellbeing. There was a clear remit to ensure that the involvement of young people was central to the day and positive and that their views would be included in the final recommendations made to regional and local policy leads.
The Teenage Pregnancy conference (January 2008), entitled Motivate, engage, inspire held in January 2008 showcased innovative and promising local and regional practice. Dr Wez Perkins, professor in sociology from New York, returned to the UK to present social normative theory, with local presentations from organisations implementing this model within their sexual health/teenage pregnancy strategies. This event was organised by Government Office for the North East and Government Office for the Yorkshire and The Humber, in partnership with the teenage pregnancy National Support Team and Brook.
