Government Offices make a regional contribution to the Government’s aim to build a safe, just and tolerant society, protect the public and ensure the balance between the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families and communities is properly maintained. Government Offices also deliver the four key themes of the National Drug Strategy.

We work closely with the 23 Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) and the 12 Drug Action Teams (DATs) in the region. The overall objective of the partnerships is to reduce crime, fear of crime, anti-social behaviour and drug-related crime.
We are responsible for the management of a number of funding regimes totalling £8.78 million. We also focus on supporting improvements in the performance of the CDRPs and DATs and also overseeing the closer working and possible merger of the partnerships.
In July 2007 the Home Office published a new National Crime Strategy for 2008-11. In October, the Government announced its targets for the same period in a series of key Public Service Agreements. These included targets related to community safety.
In September 2007 the Home Office published Delivering Community Safety: A Guide to Effective Partnership Working to help partnerships meet certain minimum standards.
In December 2007 the Home Office revised its National Community Safety Strategy for 2008-11 to ensure that it is clearly in line with the National Crime Strategy and national targets. It reflects a shift in emphasis to more serious violence.
In February 2008 the Home Office published a new drug strategy for 2008-11, Drugs: protecting families and communities.
In April 2008 the Government published Crime Reduction and Community Safety: The crucial role of the new local performance framework which explains how two new systems for measuring performance under the above strategies and Local Area Agreements will be linked.
