Burglary was down by 13 per cent, robbery down by 21 per cent and vehicle crime down by 17 per cent. These decreases are all better than the national average.
The percentage of people in the North East with high levels of worry about burglary in 2007-08 was lower than the national average. Those with high levels of worry about car crime were the same as the national average.
About half of all crime is committed by a small number of prolific and persistent offenders. We are responsible for overseeing the Prolific and Priority Offenders Scheme that was set-up across the region to address this. We are also involved in local drugs intervention programmes which were set up in areas with the highest rates of acquisitive crime.
