Acquisitive Crime

There are a number of initiatives throughout our region aimed at tackling acquisitive crime. Acquisitive crime, also called "Property Crime", is defined as theft, including theft from people and from vehicles. Burglary is an acquisitive crime.

‘Acquisitive crime’ covers aspects of theft and robbery including street crime, business and retail crime and vehicle crime. More information on the national picture

House burglary and vehicle crime, theft of vehicles and theft from vehicles, have seen dramatic reductions over recent years across the North East.

The latest British Crime Survey (July 2008) shows substantial reductions in police recorded acquisitive crime in the North East between 2006-07 and 2007-08. Burglary was down by 13 per cent, robbery down by 21 per cent and vehicle crime down by 17 per cent. These decreases are all better than the national average.

The percentage of people in the North East with high levels of worry about burglary in 2007-08 was lower than the national average. Those with high levels of worry about car crime were the same as the national average.

About half of all crime is committed by a small number of prolific and persistent offenders. We are responsible for overseeing the Prolific and Priority Offenders Scheme that was set-up across the region to address this. We are also involved in local drugs intervention programmes which were set up in areas with the highest rates of acquisitive crime.

For more information on acquisitive crime in your area go to Cleveland, Durham and Northumbria police home pages.
