There are a number of initiatives throughout our region aimed at tackling acquisitive crime. Acquisitive crime, also called property crime, is defined as theft, including theft from people and from vehicles. Burglary is an acquisitive crime.
‘Acquisitive crime’ covers aspects of theft and robbery including street crime, business and retail crime and vehicle crime.
More information on the national picture
In February 2009, a number of measures were announced aimed at
ensuring the current economic situation does not result in an increase
in burglaries.
The latest British Crime
Survey (December 2009) shows that:
-
police recorded acquisitive crime, decreased substantially
between 2007-08 and 2008-09
-
police recorded burglary was down by 16 per cent
and robbery down by 18 per cent. These decreases
are better than the national average.
In the North East we are overseeing the Prolific and
Priority Offenders Scheme and drugs intervention
programmes – these aim to reduce acquisitive crime across the
region, especially by the small number of persistent offenders, who
commit about half of all crime.
