The Home Office provides research and analytical support for community safety work in Government Offices and the Welsh Assembly Government. This work support the efforts of Government Office and the Welsh Assembly teams to improve the performance of local partnerships and spread good practice.

The main areas for research and analytical support in the North East are:
- Supporting performance management against crime reduction, drugs and alcohol related Home Office public service agreements (PSA) in the region.
For example, assisting the development of performance management processes and systems, target monitoring local area agreements and regularly monitoring performance against targets, highlighting areas for attention.
- Providing further research into and analysis of regional crime patterns and possible local solutions.
For example, exploring in detail individual crime types identifing, patterns, trends and issues across the region. Carrying out and supporting crime and drugs research and evaluation, in line with regional and national priorities.
- Promoting effective use analysis and evidence in the region.
For example, assisting with the enhancement and development of analytical capacity in the region through the Improving Intelligence Performance and Information Forum (IIPIF) in preparation for the adoption of the principles of the National Intelligence Model (NIM).
