Culture has unequalled potential to:
- enrich individual lives
- enhance quality of life
- reach out to communities that feel excluded.
The importance of culture, leisure and sport in addressing social inclusion, health and crime is becoming more accepted. We work with a range of regional and local partners to identify where links can be made with other government programmes at local level.
We provide a regional focus for the Department for Culture Media and Sport’s (DCMS) national policies and programmes on:
- sport
- arts
- museums
- libraries and archives
- heritage and architecture
- film and broadcasting
- tourism
- licensing
- gambling and the lottery.
We also promote the work of the DCMS and its sponsored bodies in the region. This includes developing partnerships and facilitating links between ourselves, DCMS and the wider cultural sector. We promote a shared understanding of regional cultural needs and play a full part in the development of cultural policies in the region.
Our key responsibilities are to:
- effectively circulate advice and information on DCMS policy in the region
- assist in the sponsorship of Culture North East (the regional cultural consortium) – this includes monitoring, promoting and facilitating the implementation of the Regional Cultural Strategy
- work with regional partners to enhance access to culture and sport in order to increase and broaden its impact and to significantly increase the take-up of cultural and sporting opportunities
- make sure that the culture, creativity and enterprise agendas take on a more practical and effective role – to help with the delivery of the regeneration, education and social cohesion agendas
- work closely and effectively with the North East Assembly, the European Partnership and One NorthEast to ensure the growth of cultural businesses, the creative industries and creative industry clusters
- work with One NorthEast and other key regional partners to ensure that the tourism sector plays its full part in the economic development of the region
- support the work of One NorthEast, the North East Assembly, local authorities and local strategic partnerships in promoting culture and the integration of culture into relevant regional and local strategies such as the Regional Economic Strategy, Regional Spatial Strategy, community strategies, Regional Image Strategy and Regional Events Strategy.
