Sports and Recreation

We work closely with Sport England North East to ensure that the benefits of sport are more widely understood. Helping us deliver the wider government cross-cutting agenda such as healthier living and increasing participation in physical activities, social inclusion and crime prevention.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) aims to improve the quality of life for all through providing better sporting opportunities at every level. Sport is very powerful both in the pursuit of excellence and helping to tackle social and health problems. The 2004 Spending Review will bring £431 million from central government for sport over the period 2005 to 2008. More information on the national picture

Game Plan was published in January 2003 to provide a national strategy for delivering the Government’s sport and physical activity objectives. Following on from Game Plan, Sport England North East recently published the North East Regional Plan for Sport and Physical Activity 2004-2008.

We are working closely with Sport England to establish a Regional Physical Activities Forum. The forum will encourage a more strategic approach to the delivery of government targets for increased participation and promote best practice in health and physical activity.
