Beacon councils

The Beacon Council Scheme was established to recognise the excellent work done by local authorities across the country in delivering innovative and high quality services, and to spread the benefits of that work more widely. After ten years, the Beacons Scheme was replaced in 2009 by the Local Innovation Awards scheme.

The first Local Innovation Awards scheme winners were announced on 3 March 2010, with North East councils receiving five of the nine awards. Read the Communities and local Government press notice.

Sunderland won an award for Policing our communities together. Northumberland won awards for achieving more through partnerships, keeping children and young people safe in the community and a further two Bright Ideas awards for carers as expert care partners and strengthening families.

Each of the awards is worth £560,000 (to share and promote good practice), and the good ideas each receive £50,000. Details of the awards.

Over the previous ten rounds of the Beacon Council Scheme the North East achieved considerable success with 51 successful schemes.
