The first Local Innovation Awards scheme winners were announced on 3 March
2010, with North East councils receiving five of the nine awards.

Sunderland won an award for Policing our communities together.
Northumberland won awards for achieving more through
partnerships, keeping children and young people safe in the community
and a further two Bright Ideas awards for carers as expert care partners
and strengthening families.
Each of the awards is worth £560,000 (to share and promote good
practice), and the good ideas each receive £50,000.

Over the previous ten rounds of the Beacon Council Scheme the North East
achieved considerable success with
51 successful
schemes.
