Organised as part of the Journal's Taste North East England Campaign, launched on 15 April 2008, the event aims to raise awareness of the array of local and regional produce available across the region and encourage the uptake of these products by the public sector, private sector and general public.
Recently, local and regional food sales have been estimated to be between £71 million and £100 million, or 4 per cent and 6 per cent in England, which is relatively low compared to other regions. The campaign seeks to put the North East back on the food map nationally.
