Minister visits learning centre at Holme House Prison

Published: Fri, 04 Jul 2008 13:02:59

Prisons Minister David Hanson MP officially opened the Prison Officers Association (POA) learning centre at Holme House prison in Stockton-on-Tees, which provides essential skills and professional support to members of staff, their family and friends.

POA Learning has provided quality learning, training and development opportunities for staff in England and Wales for the last five years. The centres are run by union learning representatives and specialise in providing direction to prospective learners both inside and outside the Prison Service on the qualifications required for career progression within the Service.

David Hanson MP said:

"I am very pleased to be officially opening this learning facility.  I fully support and endorse this invaluable resource to further develop the skills and opportunities for these valuable frontline staff and their families".

The Learning Centre at Holme House has been operating since 2006 and in that time 1,185 members of staff have used the centre to learn a skill or access advice.

The courses currently available at the prison include information technology, safeguarding children, equality and diversity training and personal development, and can be undertaken online as well as in the classroom.

The centre also has excellent links with the City of Sunderland College and Stockton Adult Education, as well as Union Learn and the Fire Brigade Union.
