Ruth Thompson and Paul Callaghan will take up their three-year appointments on 14 December 2006, representing the business sector.
Margaret Hodge said:
"The RDAs have a crucial role to play as drivers of economic development in their region, working to reduce imbalances within and between regions. ONE NorthEast will be able to use the knowledge and expertise these appointments bring to help the region reach its full economic potential, boost productivity and create jobs and prosperity"
Margaret Fay, Chair of One NorthEast said:
"If One NorthEast is to continue to reflect and be responsive to the needs of the region's business community, then we need strong private sector representation on our board to shape our policy and steer our support for firms.
In this respect, Ruth and Paul are key additions to the Agency. Ruth has worked in large corporations and has a particular interest in the skills agenda and Paul has built up his own business, the Leighton Group, into one of the UK's leading technology firms.
Although they come from very different business backgrounds, they both share a desire to encourage new enterprise, stimulate business growth and improve conditions for firms to flourish in North East England. So, I'm delighted that Ruth and Paul have taken up this challenge by joining the Agency's Board."
Paul Callaghan holds no other Public Appointments. Ruth Thompson holds one other Ministerial appointment with Northern Ireland Water, which has a remuneration of £18000.
Regional Development Agency board posts attract a remuneration of £8,316 per year for a commitment of a minimum of two days per month.
Within the last five years, neither of the individuals detailed above have undertaken any political activities.
These new appointments were made following open competition in accordance with the requirements set down in the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political affiliation plays no part in the selection process.
