The Minister announced that the total sum of £230m had been allocated among the New Deal for Communities Partnerships for spending in 2008-09. This would take the NDC programme into the final years of the Government approved 10-year delivery plans. See table below for amounts allocated from the total sum among the individual NDC Partnerships.
Baroness Andrews said:
"Across the country, the New Deal for Communities partnerships have made a dramatic improvement to the lives of the people they serve.
"The evidence is clear to see, including reducing crime and the fear of crime, raising the educational achievements and aspirations of young people in the community and improving health.
"So I am delighted to confirm this significant funding for NDCs, to give them the resources they need to continue the excellent work in their communities."
All 39 New Deal for Communities partnerships are already developing strategies to build on their successes beyond the final year of the programme and into the long term, to continue to empower residents and deliver improved outcomes for every community.
A recent study measured the impact of NDCs on their local area between 2001-02 and 2005-06. Key findings included:
- An 11 percentage point increase in the number of children gaining five or more A*-C GCSEs;
- Increased satisfaction with the NDC area as a place to live;
- A seven-percentage point increase in the number of people who reported feeling part of their community.
