Denise encourages older people to get on the bus - for free!

Published: Wed, 27 Feb 2008 08:28:17

This Morning's Agony Aunt and local celebrity, Denise Robertson, is supporting a campaign by the Department for Transport to encourage eligible people to apply for the new concessionary travel tickets giving free off peak bus travel for disabled people and people aged over 60 across England.

Local concessionary tickets have been available for two years but from 1 April 2008 eligible people - and that's some 11 million - can enjoy off peak travel on any of England's buses.

Denise said: "I'm delighted to be part of this campaign helping people to get the free travel benefits that they are entitled to. For many, this new concessionary pass will give them more freedom and independence and more opportunities to socialise with friends and family. To find out more, people should contact their local authority and ask for a registration form."

Existing concessionary pass holders will need to replace their existing local bus passes will new England-wide passes. In Tyne and Wear, Nexus will write to existing pass holders informing them about the new passes. For all other areas people are advised to contact their local pass provider or visit http://www.direct.gov.uk/buspass for details of the England-wide and local benefits or for more information on the England-wide concession and eligibility.
