If as a child you enjoyed the magic of history and stories, then becoming a volunteer at Warkworth Castle in Northumberland should be right up your street.
By taking up English Heritage's call to help out at one of the largest and most impressive fortresses in Northern England some lucky volunteers will get the chance to help bring history to life by creating interactive and hands-on education sessions that are relevant to school visitors of all ages.
Part of English Heritage's Discovery Visits Programme, this is the first time such volunteers have been recruited in the region to help support school and education groups who visit the dramatic 14th century stronghold of the Percy family.
And all that enthusiastic volunteers need to do to start the ball rolling is give up one hour of their time on Saturday 23 February. From 2pm - 3pm the Sun Inn in Warkworth is the venue for a meeting organised by English Heritage to explain to prospective volunteers just how to get involved and what the role entails. No experience is necessary - just enthusiasm for the historic environment and a willingness to pass that on.
As Kate Davies, English Heritage's Education Volunteer Manager said: "This is a great opportunity for those who have a passion for the past or who feel they can pass on their enthusiasm for heritage to the next generation. Launching the Education Volunteering Programme in the North East at Warkworth Castle is a really exciting development. It was people who shaped our past so we really do need people to help explain to youngsters how that happened.
"As well as having the opportunity to meet new people, volunteers will have a chance to develop their own skills. We are looking for people who would like to make a difference and we would like them to come along to a meeting to find out more."
Volunteering at Warkworth will involve carrying out research into the castle and its area to help develop educational activities and resources for education groups who visit the site. All volunteers will be given training and an induction by English Heritage.
