South Tyneside Council hold a Beacon Council Open Day

South Tyneside Council are hosting an IDeA Beacon Authority Open Day on Monday 31 March 2008. The day will look at Neighbourhood and Community Champions; the role of elected members.

The event targets councillors and relevant officers at all tiers of local government and for that reason we are making it as financially accessible as possible. For every two paying delegates sent by an authority, up to six elected members can attend free.

The open day includes a selection of workshops covering:

  • Democratic Engagement
  • The Scrutiny Process
  • Member Development
  • Communications and Community Involvement
  • Area and Neighbourhood Working.

Welcome and outline of the day – Cllr Paul Waggot Leader South Tyneside Council  

Keynote Speakers: Cllr Iain Malcolm Deputy Leader and Chair of the Local Government Association Urban Commission and Diane Wood Assistant Chief Executive Policy speaking on Neighbourhood and Community Champions; the role of elected members

  • Presentation on South Tyneside’s unique One Team approach to empowering communities through strong community leadership
  • DVD Film – Horsley Hill Neighbourhood Action Planning
  • Question and answer session to panel made up of elected members, senior officers and partners

11.00 Morning Workshops

11.45 Tour of the Borough – coach tour of key projects including Bede`s World Heritage Site and the Foreshore, location of the Great North Run Finish.

1.00 – 1.45 Lunch – networking

1.45 Mandeep Hothi, The Young Foundation: Presentation on lessons from the Young Foundation Neighbourhoods Programme and Ward Councillors and Community Leadership: a Future Perspective – A study for Joseph Rowntree Foundation by the Young Foundation and Local Government Information Unit.
