Award-winning firm in drive to win new overseas orders

Published: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 13:22:13

An award-winning Northumberland firm is celebrating the success of a new drive to win overseas orders with the help of UK Trade & Investment's "Passport to Export" scheme.

Comesys Europe Ltd, of Cramlington, specialises in the design and manufacture of "drive by wire" automotive controls. Its key product is a range of electronic accelerator pedals used in commercial vehicles, construction equipment and industrial vehicles, which help new low emission diesel and gasoline engines requiring precise electronic control to meet tough new environmental legislation.

Earlier this year the company was awarded the title of "Most Promising New Business of the Year" in the annual North East Chamber of Commerce Awards and has been working with UK Trade & Investment to boost its overseas sales.

Jon Aitchison, Sales Director at Comesys Europe Ltd, explained:

"We aim to be a world class supplier of 'drive by wire' control systems for vehicles and expect demand for our electronic accelerator pedals to increase as the new rules on engine emissions come into force next year across Europe, the USA, India and Asia.

"With the help of Passport we have carried out extensive market research, collecting data and compiling an extensive database of vehicle manufacturers and potential competitors throughout the world.

"This enabled us to work out where our potential customers were located and then develop a detailed marketing plan. Our research also revealed that the potential market was much larger than we had originally thought - the current market is estimated at around £500 million and will quadruple in the next five years, so we wanted to ensure we were ready to make the most of those opportunities.

"Through Passport and the support of UK Trade & Investment we have visited several new markets and taken part in trade shows and we have already secured new business in Sweden, Holland, USA, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic and India.

"And we're confident there is plenty of scope for further growth both in the UK and overseas."

Joyce Rawlings, one of UK Trade & Investment's International Trade Advisers, who has been working with the company said:

"Comesys Europe Ltd is a new company, employing just four people at the moment, but with a great deal of potential.

"It has successfully identified a gap in the market and has been working hard to build relationships in the industry to ensure it can make the most of the opportunities available.

"The company's commitment and determination to succeed is already reaping rewards and it is a great example to others that you don't need to be a large, multi-national to successfully compete on the international stage.

"And UK Trade & Investment is there to help your company, whatever its size or experience, to find new customers in markets around the world."
