Newcastle City Council is preparing to create a Climate Change Strategy for the City and surrounding region and is calling for local businesses to help shape its thinking. The council is urging businesses to come along to the event to voice their opinions.
With Newcastle City Council about to draw up a city-wide Climate Change Strategy, the event is a pivotal chance for the council and local businesses to identify ways to work together for mutual gain. The proposal will address how to tackle the 1.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide the city emits. Since 43 per cent of this comes from industry, commerce and
the public sector, the challenge can only be effectively tackled through partnership working.
Adrian McLoughlin, Climate Change Officer for Newcastle City Council, said: "This is an exciting time for Newcastle as we embark on our first city-wide Climate Change Strategy. We're keen to work in partnership with the local community and urge local businesses to join this month's debate to ensure their needs are met."
James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK, said: "Climate change is a global challenge, but one which cities are well-placed to tackle through local initiatives and infrastructures. We hope this timely event in Newcastle will help to spark positive local partnerships that deliver both environmental and economic benefits for all involved."
The event is taking place at the Vermont Hotel, Newcastle. Places are limited so anyone keen to take part should contact Nicola Fisher on 020 7924 4244. For further information on the tour, visit www.bcse.org.uk/ukbcse/sus_cities/
