Improving Health: the National Picture

Regional Public Health groups work alongside other government departments and many different partners and agencies to promote health improvement and reduce health inequalities.

The work of health improvement is central to the Government's recent White Paper on public health, ‘Choosing Health - making healthy choices easier.’ The paper makes a commitment to helping people choose healthier lifestyles and includes measures to:

  • reduce obesity and improving diet and nutrition in adults and children
  • increase exercise
  • reduce the number of people who smoke
  • improve sexual health services
    encourage and support sensible drinking
  • improve mental health

Choosing Health sets out how the Government will work to provide more of the opportunities, support and information people want to enable them to choose health. It aims to inform and encourage people as individuals, and to help shape the commercial and cultural environment we live in so that it is easier to choose a healthy lifestyle.

Within each Government Office, Regional Directors of Public Health are responsible for implementing this work and for ensuring that public health aspects are considered in all major developments and initiatives.
