Improving health

Public Health North East leads the improvement of health in the region by tackling poor diet, smoking and lack of physical activity as well as addressing the wider causes of illness with the help of other local organisations.

Regional Public Health groups work alongside other government departments and many different partners and agencies to promote health improvement and reduce health inequalities. More information on the national picture

A Regional Director of Public Health sits within each Government Office. He/she is accountable to the Department of Health for translating national priorities into regional activity as well as ensuring that public health is considered in all major regional developments and initiatives.

Much of the work done in the North East is now influenced by the regional Better Health Fairer Health strategy launched in 2008.
