Transport

We help deliver the Future of Transport (2004). This updates the Transport Ten Year Plan, which laid the foundations for massive change, with investment of £180 billion. We also work closely with local authorities to monitor progress and delivery of their local transport plans.

Transport impacts on everyone's lives. Improving the transport system and its operation is a critical element in the Government’s economic, social and environmental agenda. Better access to jobs and services, particularly for those most in need, is a priority shared between local and central government, and a core aspect of Government Office work. More information on the national picture

We work with local and regional organisations, such as North East Assembly and One North East, to promote an efficient and integrated transport system. We work with other partners on:

  • cycling
  • walking
  • promoting green travel plans for business
  • the Safe Routes to School Initiative
  • freight issues
  • airports
  • rail services
  • buses

If you have any queries regarding traffic signs and lines, please email traffic.signs@dft.gsi.gov.uk

We also carry out a range of national transport casework. The applications and orders cover a wide range of transport functions and fall under a range of acts. We also handle appeals and directions to do with (mainly) non-vehicular rights of way.
