Air travel

Our role is to encourage the region's two airports, Durham Tees Valley and Newcastle International, to develop and prosper in accordance with the framework set down in the Future of Air Transport White Paper (December 2003).

Airports are required to maintain a master plan document, to set out detailed proposals for development to 2015 in some detail, together with indicative land use plans from 2016 through to 2030.

Airport master plans are also required to incorporate a surface access strategy that sets out short and long-term targets for decreasing the proportion of journeys to the airport by car and increasing the proportion by public transport, for both passengers and airport workers.

The Civil Aviation Act 2006 implements important Future of Air Transport White Paper commitments, to sustainable aviation and protection of passenger interests.
